Learning Activities
Before you begin, please review the content on cultural competence.
These learning activities will enable you to explore the case in greater
depth and to exercise your skills in cultural competence through real
life simulations.

Activity 1:
The Inside Story
|

Jacqueline Strong, the Nursing Manager, has concerns about
how nurse Christy Fitzgerald is relating to her Romani
patients. This activity will enable you to see Christy’s
original thoughts, and then the guidance that Jacqueline
is able to give her.

Activity 2:
Predicting Potential Impacts
|
|
In this activity you will analyze various conditions in
this case and predict possible consequences that those
conditions might have on Jacqueline, Christy and the Romani
patients.

Activity 3:
Understanding the Big Picture
|
|
In this activity you participate in a simulated meeting
with Christy Fitzgerald. You will try to help her identify
questions that might help her work more comfortably with
Rose’s family.

Activity 4:
Exploring Interventions
|
|
In this activity, you will participate in a simulated
meeting between Christy and Todd, a member of staff development.
Todd has engaged Christy in several discussions about cultural
competence. He would now like to present Christy with some
potential scenarios involving cultural differences and
to assess Christy’s responses. He has asked you to
join the meeting to help evaluate Christy’s responses.
